The final day of the conference, and this morning delegates had the chance to consider what the transfer of power from NHS bodies to GPs represents and what it means from the perspective patients, social care and general practice, in the first plenary panel session of the day: Patients and GPs in the driving seat.
The second panel session, The year ahead and beyond, followed on from the address from the Secretary of State yesterday and having had the chance to digest this and the other messages from the conference, this session looked at the overall impact of the challenging financial environment and of new policies and ways of working on providers, commissioners and staff.
Nigel Edwards, acting chief executive of the NHS Confederation; Chris Ham, chief executive of the King’s Fund; and Angela Greately, chair of Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust discussed with delegates how NHS organisations need to respond to the many challenges they face in the coming years.

The conference came to a close with a keynote speech from Sir David Nicholson, Chief Executive of the NHS in England, where he added more detail to the policy framework established by Andrew Lansley yesterday. He encouraged delegates to stay focused on the purpose of improving quality of services and empowering staff.
He also talked of the need to be realistic and not give people false hope. “With the necessary management cost savings, some people are going to lose their jobs and we shouldn’t give people false hope.”
But he was clear that NHS leaders should have confidence: “We have done great things before and we can do so again.”
